Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky
I heard a Voice within the Tavern cry,
  "Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup
Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."

不辭看盡萬花紅，頃刻風(fēng)飄到土中。萬點(diǎn)如塵君那見，只隨春殉古英雄。

But come with old Khayyám, and leave the Lot

春風(fēng)殉盡只由他，古帝名王干我何！不問大人龍戰(zhàn)怒，閑聽小雅《鹿鳴》歌。

"How sweet is mortal Sovranty!" —think some:
Others—"How blest the Paradise to come!"
  Ah, take the Cash in hand and wave the Rest;
Oh, the brave Music of a distant Drum!

或教富貴賺渠儂，或覓蓬萊竟不逢。為報(bào)及時(shí)行樂好，遠(yuǎn)方喪鼓任咚咚。

○及時(shí)行樂：《古詩十九首》其十五：“ 為樂當(dāng)及時(shí)，何能待來茲？”○四版字句有更易，意猶同也。譯文末句一依原文。

Oh, come with old Khayyám, and leave the Wise
To talk; one thing is certain, that Life flies;
  One thing is certain, and the Rest is Lies;
The Flower that once has blown for ever dies.

知也無涯生有涯，何如與我共金卮？君看今日花成海，不到明年樹上枝。

○金卮：金制酒器也。陸厥《京兆歌》：“壽陵之街走狐兔，金卮玉碗會(huì)銷鑠。”○原文云：“來！與老莪默飲哉！辯也付多方者耳。吾生如馳，惟此為信也。惟此為信也，馀皆是誑。不見花開一度，終付飄零?！陛^四版易首二句，譯文以莊子言慨嘆。

Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried,
Asking, "What Lamp had Destiny to guide
  Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"
And—"A blind Understanding!" Heav'n replied.

仰對(duì)蒼蒼問一言，可能示我道根源？高天潛運(yùn)如相答：“汝自冥行道自昏?！?/p> ○蒼蒼：天之色也。《莊子·逍遙游》：“天之蒼蒼，其正色邪？”○潛運(yùn)：暗中運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)也。王屮《頭陀寺碑文》：“一音稱物，宮商潛運(yùn)?！?span id="xjmmhrc" class='myCommentTag'>○原文云：“吾乃呼彼運(yùn)行之天，問曰：‘運(yùn)命以何燈燭，昭示冥行中匍匐之嬰孩？’天曰：‘瞽知也。’”

For in the Market-place, one Dusk of Day,
I watch'd the Potter thumping his wet Clay:
  And with its all obliterated Tongue
It murmur'd—"Gently, Brother, gently, pray !"

晚市閑來看冶陶，冶中陶土作悲號(hào)：“君當(dāng)太古原吾與，今日君工且緩操?！?/p> ○四版易“晚市”為“行途”耳。

Ah, fill the Cup :—what boots it to repeat
How Time is slipping underneath our Feet:
  Unborn TO-MORROW, and dead YESTERDAY,
Why fret about them if TO-DAY be sweet!

但將美酒滿吾杯，嘆甚光陰逝不回？明日未來前日盡，只消今日笑顏開。

○明日二句：原文云：“但得今日之歡，何有于未生之明日，已死之昨日也！”

One Moment in Annihilation's Waste,
One Moment, of the Well of Life to taste—
  The Stars are setting and the Caravan
Starts for the Dawn of Nothing—Oh, make haste!

渴飲何妨片刻留？甘泉一脈出荒丘。星光空賺胡商隊(duì)，遠(yuǎn)逐黃沙天盡頭。

○星光二句：原文云：“星移斗轉(zhuǎn)，商隊(duì)晨興大漠之中，直赴無何有之鄉(xiāng)。”

The Grape that can with Logic absolute
The Two-and-Seventy jarring Sects confute:
  The subtle Alchemist that in a Trice
Life's leaden Metal into Gold transmute.

酒士硁硁術(shù)可誇，傲然七十二方家。能收君淚如鉛水，鍊作黃金買歲華。

○硁硁：從容貌。《新唐書·裴均傳》：“均字君齊，以明經(jīng)為諸暨尉。數(shù)從使府辟，硁硁以才顯?！?span id="tfizqaw" class='myCommentTag'>○四版易 The subtle Alchemist 為 The sovereign Alchemist ，譯文易“士”為“仙”也。

But leave the Wise to wrangle, and with me
The Quarrel of the Universe let be:
  And, in some corner of the Hubbub coucht,
Make Game of that which makes as much of Thee.

儒墨從教辯是非，獨(dú)從天運(yùn)識(shí)幾微。閑中袖手觀爭論，彼此空馀一笑譏。

○天運(yùn)：天命也。陶潛《責(zé)子》詩：“天運(yùn)茍如此，且盡杯中物?！?span id="spywvnt" class='myCommentTag'>○幾微：微妙也。《漢書·蕭望之傳》：“愿陛下選明經(jīng)術(shù)，溫故知新，通于幾微謀慮之士以為內(nèi)臣，與參政事。”○袖手：閒逸貌。韓愈 《石鼎聯(lián)句》序：“道士啞然笑曰：‘子詩如是而已乎？’即袖手聳肩，倚北墻坐。”○原文云：“任多方者辯哉！吾獨(dú)與天地精神相往來。塵囂之外獨(dú)踞一隅，與嘲汝者為嘲謔耳。”

For in and out, above, about, below,
'Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show,

And if the Wine you drink, the Lip you press,
End in the Nothing all Things end in—Yes—
  Then fancy while Thou art, Thou art but what
Thou shalt be—Nothing—thou shalt not be less.

醇酒婦人聊且娛，終隨萬物到虛無。一朝臨化消其寶，今日何曾我喪吾?

○臨化消其寶：陶潛《飲酒》其十一：“客養(yǎng)千金軀，臨化消其寶?！?span id="xrphcml" class='myCommentTag'>○我喪吾：《莊子·齊物論》：“今者吾喪我，汝知之乎？”○后二句原文云：“君試思哉！若汝之是終為無，汝何喪！”是與無之際，無以譯，飾以淵明之句。

While the Rose blows along the River Brink,
With old Khayyám the Ruby Vintage drink:
  And when the Angel with his darker Draught
Draws up to Thee——take that, and do not shrink.

君來共我倒金杯，好見玫瑰江畔開。一旦忘川川上去，孟婆捧酒可堪哀？

○倒金杯：吳芾《志道相見和前韻》：“肯辭痛飲倒金杯。”○我：原文之老莪默也。○孟婆：亦以譯天使也，忘川則以附會(huì)，與四版之譯文同。

Oh, Thou, who didst with Pitfall and with Gin
Beset the Road I was to wander in,
  Thou wilt not with Predestination round
Enmesh me, and impute my Fall to Sin?

人生漂蕩苦消魂，處處相逢有酒樽。我到樽前沉湎盡，事從天定待何言！

○四版易夷猶為決絕，故譯文末句辭氣不同。

Listen again. One Evening at the Close
Of Ramazán, ere the better Moon arose,
  In that old Potter's Shop I stood alone
With the clay Population round in Rows.

一版其五十九（四版其八十二）

側(cè)耳將除禁食天，望中新月待初懸。行來獨(dú)向陶家肆，甕缶成行擁我前。

○側(cè)耳二句：四版易“側(cè)耳”為“矚目”，易“月”為“日”，譯文相應(yīng)。

And, strange to tell, among that Earthen Lot
Some could articulate, while others not:
  And suddenly one more impatient cried—
"Who is the Potter, pray, and who the Pot?"

亦有能言有不能，忽來小缶頗相矜。“若知天下無同異，匠器區(qū)區(qū)辨幾曾？”

○相矜：譯原文之“躁直”也。○幾曾：那曾也。貫休《上馮使君渡水僧障子》：“跣足拄巴藤，潺湲渡幾曾。”徐積《謝穎叔》：“不醉黃花我?guī)自?。?

Said one—"Folks of a surly Tapster tell,
And daub his Visage with the Smoke of Hell;
  They talk of some strict Testing of us—Pish!
He's a Good Fellow, and 'twill all be well."

言是凡間惡主人，無情棄汝等埃塵。又言大任勞筋骨，詎料慈恩善且真！

Ah, Moon of my Delight who know'st no wane,
The Moon of Heav'n is rising once again:
  How oft hereafter rising shall she look
Through this same Garden after me—in vain!

盈歡明月幾曾虛？又向東天光景舒。從此園林還照遍，年年只是不逢予。

Were it not Folly, Spider-like to spin
The Thread of present Life away to win—
  What? for ourselves, who know not if we shall
Breathe out the very Breath we now breathe in!

蛛網(wǎng)空留暗牖懸，一生辛苦只如煙。年華呼吸成消逝，知是他愚是我賢？

○蛛網(wǎng)：薛道衡《昔昔鹽》：“暗牖懸蛛網(wǎng)，空梁落燕泥?！?span id="jwwofpy" class='myCommentTag'>○原文云：“寧不愚哉！效彼蜘蛛，傾一生之絲而織為網(wǎng)，何所得耶？吾輩乎！一呼一吸，將無同耶？”

The Palace that to Heav'n his pillars threw,
And Kings the forehead on his threshold drew——
  I saw the solitary Ringdove there,
And "Coo, coo, coo," she cried; and "Coo, coo, coo."

廢宮遺柱上淩空，日角龍顏想像中。惟有斑鳩偏稱意，自來自去叫春風(fēng)。

○日角龍顏：帝王之貴相也。日角，《后漢書·光武帝紀(jì)上》：“身長七尺三寸，美須眉，大口，隆準(zhǔn)，日角?！崩钯t注引鄭玄《尚書中候》注：“日角謂庭中骨起，狀如日?！饼堫?，眉骨圓起也。《史記·高祖本紀(jì)》：“高祖為人，隆準(zhǔn)而龍顏，美須髯，左股有七十二黑子?！?span id="dtcaokj" class='book'>《梁書·元帝紀(jì)》：“陛下日角龍顏之姿，表于徇齊之日；彤云素氣之瑞，基于應(yīng)物之初?！?span id="ykidnyb" class='myCommentTag'>○惟有二句：杜牧《過勤政樓》：“唯有紫苔偏得意，年年因雨上金鋪。”

Another Voice, when I am sleeping, cries,
"The Flower should open with the Morning skies."
  And a retreating Whisper, as I wake—

Do you, within your little hour of Grace,
The waving Cypress in your Arms enlace,
  Before the Mother back into her arms
Fold, and dissolve you in a last embrace.

猶及皇天未盡恩，云幡高揭速招魂。不然潛寐黃泉下，那有花枝與酒樽？

○云幡：云旗也。仲殊 《定風(fēng)波·獨(dú)登多景樓》：“花戟云幡擁上方。”此指招魂之幡也。招魂：杜甫 《乾元中寓居同谷縣作歌》之五“嗚呼五歌兮歌正長，魂招不來歸故鄉(xiāng)?！背鹫做椬ⅲ骸肮湃苏谢曛Y，不專施于死者。公詩如‘剪紙招我魂’，‘老魂招不得’，‘南方實(shí)有未招魂’，與此詩‘魂招不來歸故鄉(xiāng)’，皆招生時(shí)之魂也。本王逸 《楚辭》注?！痹脑疲骸氨苏姓兄诩喗恚倮p于臂上?！苯褚栽漆φ谢曜g之也。○不然二句：《古詩十九首》其十三：“潛寐黃泉下，千載永不寤?！痹脑疲骸凹袄れ`之未攬，銷汝身于終抱?！弊g文衍其意。○余舊譯曰：“勸君莫待化塵時(shí)，空自招招柏樹枝。一晌沉酣須盡意，不應(yīng)辜負(fù)到金卮。”以次句無故實(shí)而改譯。

If but the Vine and Love-abjuring Band
Are in the Prophet's Paradise to stand,
  Alack, I doubt the Prophet's Paradise
Were empty as the hollow of one's Hand.

二版其六十五

無酒無歡在上宮，神仙學(xué)盡竟何功？漫疑君向遙天去，縱使相逢妙手空。

○上宮：仙宮也。《云笈七簽》卷二九：“上上禪善無量壽天王……治天王國朱林七寶瓊臺(tái)，乘十二玄龜飛青羽蓋，從上宮太仙玉童三十二人。”○妙手空：裴铏《傳奇·聶隱娘》有“人莫能窺其用，鬼莫得躡其蹤”之妙手空空兒。○原文所言伊教天堂之說也，譯文以神仙事譯之。

For let Philosopher and Doctor preach
Of what they will, and what they will not—each
  Is but one Link in an eternal Chain
That none can slip, nor break, nor over-reach.

二版其七十七

賢哲紛紛說道樞，未知終稱彼情無？環(huán)中一節(jié)雖然在，應(yīng)自難窮但守株。

○環(huán)中二句：司空圖《詩品·雄渾》:“超以象外，得其環(huán)中。持之匪強(qiáng)，來之無窮。”守株：守株待兔之省。葛洪《抱樸子·明本》：“每見凡俗守株之儒，營營所習(xí)，不博達(dá)理?！痹脑疲骸盁o脫，無絕，無逾?！弊g文以守株譯之。

Nay, but, for terror of his wrathful Face,
I swear I will not call Injustice Grace;
  Not one Good Fellow of the Tavern but
Would kick so poor a Coward from the place.

落落由他怒目瞋，豈將大偽喚為真？筵前賓客多剛直，正怕相逢罵座人。

○落落：磊落也。《三國志·蜀志·彭羕傳》：“若明府能招致此人，必有忠讜落落之譽(yù)?！迸坎_：王令《寄王正叔》詩：“怒目瞋以環(huán)?！?span id="gqwfezm" class='myCommentTag'>○大偽喚為真：《宋史·呂誨傳》:“大奸似忠,大佞似信?！逼湟馑浦?。○筵前二句：《史記·魏其武安侯列傳》：“灌夫?yàn)槿藙傊笔咕?，不好面諛。”“武安遂怒，劾灌夫罵坐不敬，系居室?！痹脑疲骸熬扑林袆傊闭哒?，必踢彼佞人出也?！弊g文以灌夫事譯之。

And once again there gather'd a scarce heard
Whisper among them; as it were, the stirr'd
  Ashes of some all but extinguisht Tongue,
Which mine ear kindled into living Word.

低語私言總不停，更無九譯遣誰聽？只如太古冥冥響，向我神聰耳畔醒。

曰死曰生常有言，談因談果竟無門。忽來小缶聲猶慍：“匠器區(qū)區(qū)何待論？”

○曰死二句：原文云：“死者生者無不同爾。何也？緣何也？問之也易；其由也，答之也難。”譯文但求肖其辭氣耳，不必論其條目。

Whither resorting from the vernal Heat
Shall Old Acquaintance Old Acquaintance greet,
  Under the Branch that leans above the Wall
To shed his Blossom over head and feet.

二版其九十九

辭卻春溫向冷塵，逢迎恐有舊交親。墻頭又倩東風(fēng)到，吹落薔薇覆我身。

○春溫：春日之暖也。《史記·田敬仲完世家》：“夫大弦濁以春溫者，君也；小弦廉折以清者，相也?！?span id="oreoryy" class='myCommentTag'>○墻頭二句：原文云：“彼處高墻之上，有枝條迤邐而垂，以落花覆我身焉?！弊g文添譯“東風(fēng)”字。

Oh if the World were but to re-create,
That we might catch ere closed the Book of Fate,
  And make The Writer on a fairer leaf
Inscribe our names, or quite obliterate!

重寫圣人河洛書，不須運(yùn)盡恨其徂。彼時(shí)猶及呼司命，直改吾生到太初。

○其徂：往也。韋孟《諷諫詩》：“歲月其徂?！?span id="uekupvb" class='myCommentTag'>○原文云：“若此世界能更造，及運(yùn)命之卷未掩也，吾使司命簿者另以新頁書吾人名，或徑削之?！弊g文以“重寫河洛”譯“世界更造”也。

Better, oh better, cancel from the Scroll
Of Universe one luckless Human Soul,
  Than drop by drop enlarge the Flood that rolls
Hoarser with Anguish as the Ages roll.

乞?qū)⑺久緛矸?，銷去人間一苦魂。日月相催愁似海，濤聲夜夜是鳴冤。

  How oft hereafter rising will she look
Among those leaves—for one of us in vain!

明月東天又上來，梧桐影里自徘徊。從今夜夜相尋了，只向空園照冷杯。

If I myself upon a looser Creed

我如忠恕未躬行，漫自人前有善名。誠愿相邀天道鑒，終身甘足報(bào)施平。

○忠恕：《論語·里仁》：“夫子之道，忠恕而已矣?！敝祆浼ⅲ骸氨M己之謂忠，推己之謂恕。”躬行：親身施行也。《論語·述而》：“躬行君子，則吾未之有得。”○報(bào)施：報(bào)答也。《史記·伯夷列傳》：“天之報(bào)施善人，其何如哉？”○原文云：“倘吾以無力之約束，串善行之珠而齊之，吾將因是而禱：吾終不以一當(dāng)二也?！弊g文無能達(dá)其喻意，而以《史記·伯夷列傳》之意衍之也。

Oh, Thou who burn’st in Heart for those who burn
In Hell, whose fires thyself shall feed in turn;
  How long been crying, “Mercy on them, God!”
Why, who art Thou to teach, and He to learn?

其二

獄火炎炎豈用薪？君心焚盡到君身?？账忌系鄞拱?，勞苦呼天錯(cuò)使人。

○炎炎：火烈貌。《史記·天官書》：“﹝天狗﹞所墮及，望之如火光，炎炎沖天。”○上帝：天帝也。《易·象傳·豫》：“先王以作樂崇德，殷薦之上帝，以配祖考?！卑懀喊z也。《孟子·告子上》“放其心而不知求，哀哉！”趙岐注：“不行仁義者，不由路、不求心者也，可哀憫哉！”○勞苦呼天：《史記·屈原賈生列傳》：“人窮則反本，故勞苦倦極，未嘗不呼天也；疾痛慘怛，未嘗不呼父母也?！?

Be of Good Cheer— the sullen Month will die,
And a Young Moon requite us by and by:
  Look how the old one, meager, bent and wan,
With Age and Fast, is fainting from the Sky!

其三

歡兮新月待酬償，莫惜團(tuán)團(tuán)舊月光。自把乾坤禁斷后，無邊風(fēng)色盡昏黃。

○新月：開齋時(shí)所見新生之月也。酬償：償齋月之禁也。○團(tuán)團(tuán)：圓月貌。蘇軾 《次韻毛滂法曹感雨詩》：“空庭月與影，強(qiáng)結(jié)三友歡。我豈不足歟？要此清團(tuán)團(tuán)?！?span id="msqaoyq" class='myCommentTag'>○舊月：原文云：“齋戒之時(shí)日，彼月亦羸弱、佝僂、蒼白如老者矣，今從天際逝也。”故雖其團(tuán)團(tuán)之時(shí)而莫惜也。○禁斷：禁絕也。《三國志·魏志·武帝紀(jì)》：“禁斷淫祀，奸宄逃竄，郡界肅然?！?span id="fsnlrbx" class='myCommentTag'>○風(fēng)色：風(fēng)光也。溫庭筠 《西洲曲》：“西洲風(fēng)色好，遙見武昌樓。”昏黃：韓偓 《曲江晚思》：“煙月愁昏黃?！弊园讯?，原文無，衍文意也。

You and I are the image of a pair of compasses;
Though we have two heads we have one body;
  when we have fixed the center for our circle,

其四

規(guī)如吾汝形俱有，共一身兮分二首。圓徑圓周果取中，合其二首平行走。

○圓徑圓周：圓之直徑與周長也。取中：取其中則圓心定矣。

Khayyam, who stitched the Tents of Science,
Has fallen in Grief’s furnace and been suddenly burned;
  The shears of Fate have cut the tent-ropes of his life,
And the Broker of Hope has sold him for nothing!

其五

知也有涯如帳廬，無涯天地憑誰覆？帳廬作就誤今生，又把來生報(bào)施瀆。

○原文云：“吾莪默亦嘗制知之帳廬也，而終為悲苦之爐火所灼。運(yùn)命之剪刀既斷其帳繩，希冀之估客復(fù)售之以空無?！弊g文以帳廬有涯、天地?zé)o涯為喻意，且質(zhì)言今生與來生也。
